Keys to quality early learning

Quality early learning opportunities can happen everywhere; at home, out in the community, and in early learning programs. Here are some tips and resources that promote quality early learning.

Families

Remember that every moment is a learning experience and how you interact with young children affect their early learning. Key aspects of family interactions that promote quality early learning include:

• a home life that makes the child feel safe and secure
• proper health and nutrition
• family time - The more time that parents can spend playing with and talking to their children, the better!

Early Learning Programs

A quality early learning program, such as child care, Head Start, or preschool, will help prepare your child for success in school and in life. Here are some things to look for:

Does the child care or Head Start program participate in Keystone STARS? Programs in Keystone STARS (at STAR 1-4 levels) are improving their quality to better serve your child.

What education do the teachers have? Teachers in quality programs have education in child development, such as a Child Development Associate (CDA), associate’s or bachelor’s degree.

Are classes small? When classes are small, teachers have more time to spend with each child. This helps children bond with their teachers and helps teachers better assess each child's needs. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) has best practice guidelines for each age group. For example, the ideal child size ratio for a pre-kindergarten program would be two adults (one teacher and one teacher aide) for 17 children.  

Does the program provide activities appropriate for your child’s age and development? Teachers should observe your child when he enters the program and provide activities that will help your child grow.

Does the program keep parents informed of their child’s progress? Quality programs will talk with you about how your child is learning and suggest ways you can help your child learn at home.

Are the children happy and involved? Learning should be fun!
