What are the Pennsylvania Early Learning Standards?

The Pennsylvania Early Learning Standards were created as a joint project of the Department of Education and the Department of Public Welfare's Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL) and the Department of Public Welfare's Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (OMHSAS) as part of Pennsylvania's commitment to early childhood education and care.

The Early Learning Standards provide information about what children usually know or are able to do within specific age ranges.  The standards can help inform families, teachers and other educational professionals about appropriate expectations for children of different ages.  There are also examples of specific ways a child may show adults what he/she knows or is able to do.  Also provided are ways families can encourage and support their child in learning.
