Children's Health Insurance Program – CHIP

CHIP is Pennsylvania's program to provide health insurance to all uninsured children and teens who are not eligible for or enrolled in Medical Assistance. Regardless of the reasons your children might not have health insurance, CHIP may be able to help you. You may pay a co-pay depending on your income.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, also known as LIHEAP, helps low-income families pay their heating bills. LIHEAP is a grant that offers assistance in the form of a cash grant, sent directly to the utility company, or a crisis grant for households in immediate danger of being without heat. You can apply for this benefit through the COMPASS website.

Food Assistance

Sometimes families may find themselves in a need for food.  There are organizations, called food banks, throughout Pennsylvania communities that can assist families with obtaining food on a short term basis.

Immunizations

Did you know that children starting at birth may need immunizations to prevent several childhood diseases?  Many child care providers may require that children who attend their program be up to date on their immunizations. 

To find which immunizations your child may need at specific ages, visit the PA Department of Health website.  You can also find information about no-cost immunizations through the Vaccines for Children program.

PA Resources for Your Family’s Health

The Department of Health assists families and communities with a wide range of programs and resources. For example, their helplines focus on the needs of families all through life. You can call a toll-free number to receive free information on prenatal health, breastfeeding, accessible recreation and parks, caring for a child with special needs, maintaining a healthy house, and much more. You can also receive help locating free or low-cost services in your region.
